Explore key concepts related to functions of behavior, motivating operations, antecedent intervention, reinforcement, differential reinforcement, consequence interventions, punishment and extinction procedures

par Najila Sheikh
1

All behavior occurs to gain something desired (attention/access)or escape from aversive (escape/avoidance). Understanding the reinforcement for the behavior allows us to gain insight into what motivates an individual to engage in certain behaviors.

2

A person acting silly to make their classmates laugh could be hypothesized to be what function of behavior that involves receiving socially mediated reinforcement?

3

A person pushing their work materials off their desk because it’s too difficult could be hypothesized to be due to what function of behavior?

4

This is a function of behavior that involves gaining an activity or tangible

5

The organism provides their own access to something enjoyable or escape from something aversive

6

A person’s behavior is mediated or changed based on people present. Someone else provides access to something or removes something aversive

7

The person themselves provides their own reinforcement or pain attenuation

8

Attention or access to tangible that is provided by another person

9

Escape or avoidance provided by another person

10

A person puts salt on their food to make it tasty.

11

A person taking medicine for their headache to remove pain.

12

An environmental variable that has two effects: value altering and behavior altering and either has an evokes a behavior or abates a behavior.

1

An antecedent intervention where a known reinforcer is delivered on a fixed time or variable time schedule of reinforcement which is not dependent on learner’s behavior.

2

A practitioner present 2 or more easy to follow instructions that are already in their behavior repertoire before presenting an instruction that is not in their repertoire.

3

The strategic organization of physical spaces to encourage positive behavior and minimize disruptive behavior.

4

A consequence intervention that is directly tied to a specific behavior which can be used to increase the future rate of desired behavior.

5

The procedure in which a response class is reinforced while the other response class is placed on extinction

6

Reinforce if any other behavior than problem behavior occurred within an interval of time or reinforce the absence of the problem behavior

7

Reinforcing an appropriate alternative behavior when placing the problem behavior on extinction

8

Reinforcement provided for behavior that are incompatible with the problem behavior. EX: Clapping is incompatible with hand to head SIB behavior.

9

Reinforcement provided for low rates of responding

10

Teaching a communicative behavior that can compete with problem behavior evoked by a motivating operation

1

Consequence based intervention resulting in a decrease in the future rate of behavior

2

Refers to the delivery of something aversive that decrease the future rate of the behavior it follows

3

Refers to the removal of something preferred that decrease the future rate of the behavior it follows.

4

Firm verbal statement that serves as a positive punisher especially when it is delivered with eye contact and close proximity

5

A consequence delivered to decrease problem behavior that can be restitutional or positive practice. Ex. Cleaning the walls after engaging in drawing on the walls or spelling a word correctly five times after making a spelling mistake.

6

A form of negative punishment where you withdraw the opportunity to earn a reinforcer or remove access to the reinforcer by using exclusion

7

A consequence intervention intended to decrease the future rate of behavior where there is loss of specific number of positive reinforcers as a consequences of a problem behavior

8

Typically used in token economy where a person has a cache of non-contingently available reinforcers, however, a token will be taken away upon each occurrence of the problem behavior

9

A consequence intervention that prevents the completion of response. As soon as a learner starts a response you would physically intervene to block the response that decreases the future rate of behavior

10

A variation of response blocking where you interrupt the behavior and redirect to complete high probability behaviors

11

When social attention is the reinforcer, you would withdraw social attention contingent on the occurrence of problem behavior that is maintained by social attention to decrease the future rate of the behavior.

12

Behavior that was previously reinforced, but now the reinforcer is no longer produced by the behavior

13

A known component of a procedure that involves no longer producing reinforcer for the behavior which results in a temporary initial increase in responding, increase in magnitude or duration of the behaviors as well as occurrence of novel behaviors.

14

A reoccurrence of a behavior that was extinguished due to the fact that alternative appropriate behavior no longer produces reinforcement. A child shouts an answer in class (extinguished behavior), when raising hands appropriately was not reinforced

15

These are likely to occur during this procedure that no longer produces reinforcement for the behavior such as novel problem behaviors, initial increase in magnitude of behaviors, initial increase in crying and aggressive acts.

16

An unexpected and potentially dangerous situation that requires immediate and effective intervention to ensure safety.
