Explanation

The membrane potential of an inactive or resting neuron is called the resting membrane potential (RMP) or resting potential.

The membrane potential of an inactive or resting neuron is called the resting membrane potential (RMP) or resting potential.

Depolarization is the process by which the membrane potential becomes less negative, facilitating the generation of an action potential.

The repolarization phase usually returns the membrane potential back to the resting membrane potential. The efflux of potassium (K+) ions results in the falling phase of an action potential.

Hyperpolarization is a change in a cell's membrane potential that makes it more negative. Cells typically have a negative resting potential, with neuronal action potentials depolarizing the membrane.
