Explanation

Ingests food, chews and mixes it with saliva, and begins digestion of carbohydrates and fats. It then moves food into the next stage of digestion.

Produces saliva containing enzymes that help break down carbohydrates and moisten food. It also aids in swallowing and protects the mouth from bacteria.

Transports food from the throat to the stomach using muscular contractions called peristalsis. It also prevents acid reflux by closing off after food passes through.

Stores waste temporarily until the body is ready for elimination. It signals the need for defecation by stretching its walls.

Absorbs most nutrients, including carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, through specialized structures. It also plays a role in water absorption and digestion.

Supports immune function by storing beneficial gut bacteria. It may also help repopulate gut microbiota after infections.

Secretes acid and digestive enzymes to break down food, especially proteins. It churns food into a semi-liquid state before passing it to the next stage.

Produces digestive enzymes that break down carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. It also regulates blood sugar levels by releasing insulin and glucagon.

Absorbs water and electrolytes from digested material, forming solid waste. It houses beneficial bacteria that help in digestion and vitamin production.

Mixes food with bile and pancreatic enzymes to aid in digestion. It also absorbs nutrients such as iron and begins breaking down fats and proteins.
