They were brought up in Liverpool in England in 1940s and 50s . While he was still at school , Lennon formed a group called The Quarrymen . One day in 1956 , the group were playing at church fete when talented young musician called Paul McCartney was introduced to John . They began writing songs together in 1957 . They would sometimes miss school and go to Paul's house while his father was at work . There they would make up tunes on piano . It was beginning of wonderfully creative partnership . In following thirteen years they wrote over 100 songs together before The Beatles finally split up in 1970 .
