Taxes were increased to continue with the war. More than half a million US soldiers were already in Vietnam and protests were gathering more people each day to stop the war and bring the troops back. Kennedy refused to have an armed conflict in Vietnam, however, sent military forces to work as advisors from Southern Vietnam. A bar in Saigon where US. officers gathered was attached by the VietCong forces (militia from the North). Lyndon Johnson was forced to start negotiations, however, the war continued.
