long lyses cycles DNA material quickly hiding host

Viruses are non - living and must use a cell to make more viruses ( called replication ) . There are two types of virus : lytic and lysogenic . The lytic cycle occurs when a virus is active in the cell and controlling the cells organelles using its genetic material , DNA or RNA . During the lytic cycle the virus takes over its host cell and forces it to make more viruses until the host cells ( breaks open ) and releases the viruses to infect other cells and start the process over again . Examples of lytic cycles viruses are influenza ( the flu ) , common cold , or even the virus that causes COVID - 19 since it makes you sick very after exposure .

Lysogenic cycle viruses act a little different . They will still enter a cell , but instead of taking over the cell right away , their genetic combines with the host cells DNA . This causes the host cell to then pass on viral with its own DNA during cell division . Eventually , after a long period of dormancy ( like ) , the viral DNA will take over the cells that contain it , causing them to make more viruses . Dormancy can last a very time , examples of lysogenic viruses are HSV ( herpes ) and HIV ( virus that causes AIDS ) .
