Canada's industry is concentrated in the Shield region which surrounds Hudson . This area contains large of gold , silver , copper , zinc , lead , iron ore , uranium , and nickel . Although the industry is very attractive , the processes used to Canada's mineral wealth ( i . e . , blasting and digging ) often result in destruction , particularly in the areas around the themselves . Sulfur dioxide released from mining equipment reduces the quality , and chemical runoff from mining processes often contaminates supplies . The Canadian has passed legislation to the amount of mining - related allowed in its , namely in an effort to protect fisheries and seafood safety .
