The name Canada comes from a native word , Kanata , which means village . In 1535 , some used this word to give a French explorer a village . He started using it to to the area . By the 1550s , everyone had got used to calling the country Canada .

The maple leaf is the of Canada . In the 18th , the maple tree was popular with French , who used to describe it as " king of the forest " . Its leaf was in the Canadian flag in 1965 .
