It is a time to learn about the achievements , cultures , and history of Black people . Schools , communities , and take part in events and activities to celebrate these important . Black Month began in the United States in 1926 . It was started by a historian called Carter G . Woodson . He wanted people to learn more about the history and achievements of African Americans , which were often not included in history lessons . In the UK , Black History Month was first celebrated in 1987 . It was organised by Akyaaba Addai - Sebo , who worked for the Greater London Council . He that people should learn more about Black history and recognise the positive impact of Black communities in Britain . Since then , Black History Month has grown across the country . Schools , libraries , museums , and workplaces hold events such as talks , exhibitions , and workshops . These activities help people learn about important Black figures from the past and . Black History Month is not only about learning about famous people . It is also about understanding the experiences of Black communities and celebrating their cultures , traditions , and achievements . It encourages respect , equality , and inclusion for everyone . Today , Black History Month remains an important part of the UK's cultural calendar . It gives people the opportunity to reflect on history , celebrate diversity , and learn how Black people have helped shape British society .
