Balanced vs unbalanced forces

1

What does it mean when forces are balanced?

2

Which force makes a rock push downward on the ground?

3

Why doesn’t a resting rock move on the ground?

4

If wind pushes rock sideways, which force opposes that push to keep it from moving?

5

What happens when a parachute first opens?

6

How can a tennis ball change its direction when hit?

7

What keeps a planet in circular orbit around the Sun?

8

What must happen for a moving object to start moving (overcome friction)?

9

What occurs when a stronger sideways force acts on a rock?

10

Why can a falling object reach a constant speed with a parachute?

Feedback

Balanced forces cancel each other so there is no net force and no movement.

Weight is gravity pulling down; it is the downward force on the rock.

Friction opposite to other forces can balance them, keeping the rock still.

Friction from the ground and other contact forces oppose the wind’s push.

Opening parachute introduces a large drag force, unbalancing the forces and slowing the fall.

The racket applies a force changing the ball’s direction; otherwise it would continue straight.

Gravity supplies the centripetal force needed for circular orbit.

A larger push than friction is required to start motion.

Net force determines the direction of acceleration and motion.

When drag equals weight, net force is zero and speed is constant.
