Soon , they found the of an ancient building . There were pieces of pottery , wooden boxes and even old paintings . It seemed that an entire had once existed there . But why had it ? 4 The explorers continued their investigation and discovered that the settlement had been built beside an ancient river . Hundreds of years earlier , the river had changed its . Without water , the people could no longer grow food or keep their animals alive . Slowly , they their homes and moved somewhere else . Over time , the wind carried sand across the empty buildings until the entire settlement was . 5 The discovery was important because the objects left behind could tell historians about how people lived of years ago . A simple piece of wood sticking out of the sand had led the explorers to a forgotten city . Tashi had not been looking for a city that morning .
