When we look at the map of the Earth it is made up of continents . These continents . The continents do not . This is the Theory of . The idea that the continents move around the planet . The continents do not move quickly .

One piece of evidence that supports this idea is the . The coastlines of some of the continents look like they fit together like a puzzle . For example , the coastline of Africa looks as though it would fit with the coastline of South America . This is evidence that these two continents were once together and drifted .

Another piece of evidence is . The remains of now extinct organisms have been found on two or more separate continents . These species fly or swim long distances . Yet , no fossils of these organisms have been found in the between these continents . This is evidence that these continents must have drifted apart and were once continent and NOT continents .

A third piece of evidence is rock evidence or . This rock evidence states that mountain ranges act as evidence for continental drift if they have the same . This means that two mountain ranges on are found that have the same shape and age then they were once together . The rock evidence tells us that the continents have drifted apart .

Paleoclimactic evidence means evidence for continental drift from the of Earth in the past . For example , we have found the in tropical areas like Africa and South America . This tells us that these continents must have moved from someplace . In contrast , we have also found the in cold regions like North America and Northern Europe . This is a clue to help tell us that these continents probably moved from someplace .

The Shape of the Continents coastlines , the fossil evidence , and the rock evidence all tell us that the continents were and drifted apart .
