1

In Chapter 1, the readers are introduced to the Lila and Hari's situation in the fishing village of Remus.

2

The village was very traditional in sense of their roles and responsibilities between men and women.

3

According to the story, Lila and Hari's father was a scammer named Pinto who took money from the villagers with the promise of urban job opportunities only to escape with the money in the end.

4

The family was facing a significant crisis of financial struggles, alcoholism, and disease.

5

Every morning, Lila would have her morning ritual by walking to the beach at low tide to offer flowers at a sacred rock shrine.

6

With the family's unfavorable situation, Lila had to stay home and work while Hari would work on a small and dry plot of land and fish to feed his family.

7

In Chapter 2-3, the readers are introduced to the De Silvas who are wealthy merchants who travelled all the way from Rewas for their vacation.

8

The De Silvas has a vacation house called Mon Repos which is located near Lila and Hari's hut.

9

While at Mon Repos, the De Silvas employ both Lila and Hari to perform chores around their house such as cooking, cleaning, and nursing their baby.

10

The Villagers reacted in a bewildered manner towards the lax and care-free attitudes of the De Silvas as they had only thought of the ocean as a mean of survival.

11

In Chapter 4, the central idea is focused on the "Threat of Industrialization".

12

There was a stranger from the city who visited the village of Thul to spread news about the government's plan to gentrify the village.

13

The stranger tried his best to gently convince the village of the benefits of the social transformation, but the villagers did not agree with him.

14

There was a verbal conflict between the stranger and Biju about the survival of the village in the future.

15

One of the most pressing concern was the villagers were scared of the environmental destruction that would come with the government's plan of development.

16

While everyone was away, Lila was approach by the drunken neighbor (Khanekar) who came and killed pinto upon arrival to send a message about the unpaid loan.

17

Although Lila retaliated strenuously against the drunken neighbor, he still successfully intimidated her via the threat about killing Pinto.

18

While the event above was happening, Mr. De Silva had a job proposal for Hari's father to come and work for him in the city.

19

Upon hearing the job opportunity from Hari, his father started to clean himself up and went to accept the job offer in person.

20

Seeing Hari's father in an inappropriate state of drunkenness, Mr. De Silva took offence and retracted the job offer for he found him disrespectful and lack of gratitude.

21

Hari was filled with anger towards his father for sabotaging the family's chance to fix all of their problems.

22

Before letting Hari go, Mr. De Silva gave Hari his address and said that he may be able to support his family if he choose to go and work for him in the city.

23

While walking home, Hari wished that his father was a better man who would at least care about his sick mother.

24

When Hari arrived home, he saw Lila and the twins crying because Pinto had been beheaded by the Khanekar brothers to follow up on their loan threat.

25

Seeing the state of the family, Hari made the call to go away for a while and took Mr. De Silva's advice to find work in the city of Bombay.

26

Before leaving to the city, Hari had written a letter for the family to notify them about his plans.

27

Along the way, a cart driver had taken Hari along with other Thul villagers to Rewas as their first stop to Bombay.

28

While riding with cart driver, the driver refers to the "needs for ready-made products" as "a disease".

29

While in Rewas, Hari had witnessed strange sights such as women protesting, people rallying in the square, and a stranger giving a public speech against development.

30

In comparison, he thought that the women in his village were the same way.

31

The protest had an immediate result as the villager were successful in their propaganda against the government's acquisition of their land.

32

After continuing his journey from Rewas to Bombay by boat, Hari was shocked and amazed at the city's urban lifestyle.

33

There in the city, Hari was slandered by the police officer for he didn't know how traffic works.

34

There in the city, Hari was lost and wandered aimlessly without knowing where to look for the house on the address.

35

Hari met with a coconut seller (or coconut man) who gave him free coconuts.

36

Hari thought that the price of the coconut in the city was inflated significantly as he could have gotten them for free by himself in the village.

37

Near the coconut man was a baggar who had told Hari about the dark side of the city at night time.

38

An advice from the coconut man that Hari received was "Do not trust or count on the government as they would not help poor people."

39

Hari successfully reached the De Silva's house in the city on Malabar Hill thanks to the coconut man's direction.

40

Arriving at the De Silva's house in the city, Hari was pleased to meet Mrs. De Silva who welcomed him in.

41

For the second time in the city, Hari was profiled for his shabby appearance and got rejected by the bell boy of the De Silva's house.

42

A new character that was introduced in Chapter 7 is Jagu, the owner of the Sri Krishna Eating House, who took pity on him and offer him a job as well as accommodation.
