Heavily influenced by Florence Nightingale she set up the first 'non-religious order based' nursing school.

Nurses and midwives must be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA), and meet the NMBA's professional standards in order to practise in Australia. Professional standards define the practice and behaviour of nurses and midwives and include: codes of conduct, codes of ethics, guides to professional boundaries, and standards for practice/competency standards

She came to prominence while serving as a manager of nurses trained by her during the Crimean War, where she organised the tending to wounded soldiers. She gave nursing a highly favourable reputation and became an icon of Victorian culture, especially in the persona of 'The Lady with the Lamp' making rounds of wounded soldiers at night.

The miasma theory was accepted from ancient times in Europe, India, and China. The theory was eventually given up by scientists and physicians after 1880, replaced by the germ theory of disease: specific germs, not miasma, caused specific diseases. However, cultural beliefs about getting rid of odour made the clean-up of waste a high priority for cities, which is probably not a bad thing....

AHPRA supports the 14 National Boards that are responsible for regulating the health professions, including nursing and midwifery. The primary role of the National Boards is to protect the public and they set standards and policies that all registered health practitioners must meet.
