Councils around Australia are to reduce the amount of rubbish going to landfill . They want to costs and protect the environment . Local councils pay companies to collect rubbish bins and manage landfill sites , so waste disposal is becoming very expensive . Waste expert Robert Crocker from Adelaide said households are now taking more responsibility for waste . He explained that many companies continue to produce and sell cheap plastic products , while waste managers to deal with the growing amount of rubbish . He said families are " in the middle " because they buy products and also need to sort and their waste at home . Many councils already use three bins : a general waste bin , a recycling bin , and a green organics bin for food and garden waste . In some places , councils are new collection systems . Organic bins may be collected every week , while general rubbish bins may only be every two weeks . Councils believe this will encourage people to recycle and compost more often . Heather Holmes - Ross from the Local Association of South Australia said dumping waste into landfill costs councils much more money than recycling organic waste .
