Slide 1 — Purpose and Indications

Purpose: Clear airway secretions, improve ventilation, and assess tracheal patency in intubated patients.

Indications: Visible secretions, coughing without clearing, desaturation during suctioning, or abnormal breath sounds.

Slide 2 — Contraindications & Precautions

Contraindications: Suspected nasal/tracheal injury, active life-threatening hemorrhage, or high intracranial pressure with coughing.

Precautions: Minimize suction time, monitor oxygenation, and avoid excessive force or frequency.

Slide 3 — Required Equipment

Assemble sterile suction catheter, suction tubing, collection device, sterile saline (if allowed), sterile gloves, mask, and a functioning suction source.

Check catheter size appropriate for endotracheal tube diameter.

Slide 4 — Pre-Suction Assessment

Assess: Respiratory rate, SpO₂, heart rate, breath sounds, and color/quality of secretions.

Preoxygenate: Administer 100% oxygen or follow protocol for brief hyperoxygenation.

Prepare: Perform hand hygiene, wear sterile gloves, and maintain a sterile field for catheter handling.

Avoid contamination of the suction catheter during insertion.

Slide 6 — Insertion Technique

Technique: Gently insert catheter without applying suction, reaching beyond the endotracheal tube tip only to the recommended length.

Do not force catheter if resistance is met.

Slide 7 — Suctioning Process

Activate suction: Withdraw while applying intermittent suction in short bursts (10-15 seconds).

Limit total time: Each attempt should be brief to protect airway and oxygenation.

Slide 8 — Post-Suction Care

Assess after: Reassess SpO₂, heart rate, breath sounds, and agitation.

Apply supplemental oxygen as needed and document findings.

Slide 9 — Complications to Watch For

Possible issues: Hypoxemia, bradycardia, mucosal trauma, bleeding, or atelectasis.

Stop if adverse signs occur and reassess patient stability.

Document: Indication, suctioning duration, catheter size, number of attempts, SpO₂ changes, and patient response.

Follow facility protocols and ensure equipment is cleaned or discarded appropriately.
