Microsoft began in 1975 in the United . Two young friends , Bill Gates and Paul Allen , started the company . They loved computers and believed that computers would be in the future . At that time , computers were large , expensive , and not common in homes . Bill and Paul wanted to software that ordinary people could use . They named their company Microsoft , from the words " microcomputer " and " software . " At first , Microsoft made computer programs for other companies . One of the important moments was in 1981 . Microsoft worked with IBM , a big computer company . Microsoft created an operating system called MS - . This system helped people control their computers . MS - DOS became very popular , and many computer makers used it . Because of this , Microsoft very fast . Later , Microsoft created another operating system called Windows . Windows was easier to use it had pictures , icons , and a mouse . Many people around the started to use Windows on their home and work computers . Microsoft also made other products , such Microsoft Word , Excel , and PowerPoint . These programs helped people write , count numbers , and make . As time passed , Microsoft became a global company . It opened in many countries and hired people from different cultures . Microsoft also started working on new technology , such as the internet , cloud services , and video like Xbox . Today , Microsoft is known all over the world . It began as a idea with two friends and became a global company by useful technology for of people .
