Have you ever...?

We already learned that when you want to ask someone if they have ever done something in their life, you use the following phrase:

 

“Have/Has [subject] + ever + [past participle] + clause?”

 

When we are using adventure verbs that require “go”, this means we could ask,

 

“Have you ever gone [fishing/birdwatching/snorkeling/camping, etc.]?”

Asking & Answering

Additionally, we can also respond to these questions in a short or long way. Let’s say someone asks, “Have you ever gone scuba diving?” 


If the answer is affirmative, we can say “Yes, I have.” If the answer is negative, you can say “No, I have not.” 


We can also use the following contractions: 


Have not = haven’t

I have = I’ve

You have = You’ve

They have = They’ve

We have = We’ve

It’s/She’s/He’s = it has, she has, he has*


So, when someone asks, “Have you ever gone scuba diving?” 


You can answer this question in any of the following ways:


Affirmative

  • Yes, I have gone scuba diving.
  • Yes, I have. **
  • Yes, I've gone scuba diving.


Negative

  • No, I have not gone scuba diving.
  • No, I haven't.
  • No, I haven't gone scuba diving.
  • No, I've not gone scuba diving.
  • No, I have not.


*The ‘s in the contractions “it’s”, “she’s”, and “he’s” can be replaced with either “is” or “has.” 

“It’s” can mean either “it is” or “it has.” 

** In English, you cannot end a sentence with a contraction that ends in 've or 's. You cannot say, "Yes, I've" or "Yes, she's", but you can say "No, I haven't", or "No, he hasn't."

Always & Never

Additionally, we can also use the words “always” or “never.” We can put “always” or “never” right after the subject: 


She always has liked dogs.


…but the more natural way is between the conjugated form of “have” and the past participle: 


She has always liked dogs.


However, when we ask a question, the words “always” or “never” always come after the subject: 


CORRECT: “Have you always worked here?” 

INCORRECT: “Have always you worked here?”
