Experts from the Royal University in England and Sumy National Agrarian University in Ukraine studied the soil to understand the long ? term effects . They many fields now contain toxic heavy metals like cadmium , , zinc , and nickel . These can be harmful to people and can stay in the soil for many years . Ukraine is often the " breadbasket of Europe " because it grows and a lot of grain . Before the war , Ukraine was a major seller of sunflower seeds and wheat . Now , large of farmland have bomb craters and destroyed military vehicles . More than one million craters have been counted . Scientists tested 8 , 000 soil samples . They found that bomb craters not the most polluted areas . The worst pollution was found burned tanks , crashed helicopters , and drones . The news is that not all land must be abandoned . Farmers need to avoid or clean small " hotspots . " Experts are now Ukrainian farmers learn how to protect and fix the soil so the land can grow again .
