Scenario: Ventilation SystemsVersion en ligne A conversation between a PHI and an ice arena operator par Mike Scott Public Health Inspector I noticed that the make-up louvres and exhaust fans were not turned on during the flooding event. Are they working? Ice Arena Operator Yes, the ventilation system is working. They are not always turned on during a flooding event. Public Health Inspector How and when is the ventilation system activated? Ice Arena Operator The ventilation system is activated by a manual switch. It's turned on a few times a week and during ice maintenance days when the edger is in use. Public Health Inspector The ice surface, the boards, and the plexiglass trap pollutants at the ice surface. Running the ice resurfacer to flood the ice will introduce air pollutants near the ice surface and may accumulate with each flood. It is important to turn on the make-up louvres and exhaust fans during every flood to exhaust out air pollutants from the ice pad area and to bring in fresh air. Public Health Inspector A manual switch requires an employee to remember to physically turn on the ventilation system. I recommend installing a sensor on the ice resurfacer, which would automatically turn on the ventilation system when the sensor reaches the threshold of the ice pad.
