You are booked to interpret but you are worried about how they will sign. a Check with the Deaf patient and the hospital to see if they would allow a Deaf interpreter to be present (Cultural Competence) b You have done follow up assignments for torn ligaments many times and you know all of the signs and how to discuss them in ASL (Fidelity) c You brainstorm what could go wrong, but you know that it is a follow up assignment and so the checkup will probably be easy to interpret (Consequentalism) d You decide to arrive early to talk with the Deaf patient to see if you can understand their signing as per agency's policy (Deontology) e You contact the Deaf patient and video conference with them to make sure you understand them and can provide appropriate services to them (Beneficence) f 7 #7 An interpreter realizes with only 10 minutes left of the appointment that they may have misunderstood something - the Deaf patient may have signed that she now weighs 130 pounds - but the interpreter said 150. The doctor may think she has gained weight when in fact she has lost weight. a The interpreter decides she has a duty to fix any mistakes and so she turns to the doctor and explains that it could have been a 130 pounds (Deontology) b Worried the doctor may not diagnose the patient correctly, the interpreter stops both the Deaf patient and the doctor and corrects her mistake (Non Maleficence) c You know you never get numbers correct and so you ask the Deaf patient to repeat their weight (Fidelity) d The interpreter turns to the Deaf patient and explains what happened. She asks the Deaf patient how they would like to handle it (Autonomy) e 8 #8 A Deaf patient is signing normally but every now and again will have a sporadic movement - He slaps his chest from time to time - for no reason. The doctor seems unaware that this isn’t just what sign language looks like. a Ask the doctor if you can check in with the patient and then ask the Deaf patient if they want to tell the doctor about their movements- the chest slapping (Autonomy) b Suggest that a Deaf interpreter be brought in via VRI for the assignment and perhaps for any future assignments (Cultural Competence) c You decide not to embarrass the patient by pointing out their repetitive behavior (Non Maleficence) d You are worried the Deaf patient may end up getting worse or not being treated so you decide to add the phrase 'chest slap' when it occurs (Consequentialism) e 9 #9 A Deaf patient has just undergone a colonoscopy. The hospital policy states that he can not go home alone or drive himself home. There is no one waiting for him when the procedure is done. He explains to the nurse that he knows the interpreter and that the interpreter will take him home. a You explain to the patient that the agency will not allow you to drive clients and that your insurance will not cover it. You cannot drive him (Deontology) b You say you cannot drive them home as you are worried what will happen if the patient gets sick or has an emergency or an accident occurs (Consequentialism) c You talked to the deaf patient and suggests he brainstorm other ways to get home, such as with a taxi or calling a friend (Autonomy) d You decide to drive the patient home as the risk to you is nothing compared to their need to get home safely. The agency however has told you not to do this (Non Maleficence) e 10 #10 The nurse has entered the room and taken the Deaf patient’s vitals. She then leaves and the interpreter has to decide if she stays in the room or leaves. The hospital policy is that she leaves if no medical professional is in the room. However, the Deaf patient is looking scared and obviously wants to talk and to have some support. She signs, “Are you leaving?” and looks distressed. a Explain the hospital policy which the interpreter must follow and politely leave the room (Deontology) b Suggest The patient call a friend or a family member who can sign through VRS or video chat software to talk to them (Cultural Competency) c Stay in the room and chat with the patient, even if you suspect the hospital or your agency might fire you (Non-Maleficence) d Suggest she ask the nurse or doctor if it is OK for the interpreter to stay in the room (Autonomy) e Think about what the hospital will do if you stay and how the referral agency will react.
