Explore how we breathe: organs, flow, and gas exchange.

1

Introduction to the Respiratory System

2

Key Organs

Key organs include the nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, lungs, and the diaphragm, all coordinating air movement and protection.

3

Nasal Cavity

The nasal cavity filters, warms, and humidifies air using hairs, mucus, and rich blood supply before it reaches the lungs.

4

Larynx and Voice

The larynx, or voice box, protects the airway, houses vocal cords, and regulates airflow during breathing and speaking.

5

Trachea

The trachea, or windpipe, conducts air to the bronchi and is supported by C-shaped cartilage rings for flexibility and protection.

6

Bronchi and Bronchioles

Bronchi branch into smaller bronchioles, guiding air deep into the lungs where gas exchange begins.

7

Lungs and Alveoli

Lungs house millions of tiny alveoli; here, oxygen diffuses into blood and carbon dioxide diffuses out for exhalation.

8

Diaphragm and Breathing Muscles

The diaphragm and intercostal muscles contract and relax to create pressure changes, pulling air in and pushing air out.

9

Gas Exchange

Gas exchange depends on a thin respiratory membrane where oxygen enters blood and carbon dioxide exits to be exhaled.

10

Breathing Regulation

Breathing is controlled by the brainstem, which monitors carbon dioxide levels and adjusts rate and depth to maintain oxygen and pH balance.

11

Introduction to the Respiratory System

The respiratory system enables gas exchange, supplying oxygen to the bloodstream and removing carbon dioxide produced by cellular metabolism.

12

Nose and Nasal Cavity

Nose and nasal cavity filter, warm, and humidify air. Cilia and mucus trap dust, microbes, and irritants before air reaches the lungs.

13

Pharynx and Larynx

The pharynx (throat) directs air to the lower airways; the larynx contains the vocal cords and protects the airway during swallowing.

14

Trachea and Bronchi

The trachea conducts air to the lungs and branches into bronchi, which further divide into smaller bronchioles for distribution of air.

15

Lungs and Alveoli

The lungs house the bronchioles and millions of alveoli, tiny air sacs where gas exchange with capillaries occurs.

16

Breathing Mechanism

Diaphragm and intercostal muscles create pressure changes to inhale air and exhale carbon dioxide, enabling ventilation of the lungs.

17

Gas Exchange in Alveoli

Oxygen diffuses from alveoli into blood; carbon dioxide diffuses from blood into alveoli to be exhaled.

18

Oxygen Transport

Oxygen binds to hemoglobin in red blood cells and travels to tissues needing it for metabolism and energy production.

19

Carbon Dioxide Removal

Carbon dioxide travels as bicarbonate in plasma or dissolved form, returning to alveoli for removal during exhalation.

20

Respiratory Health and Disorders

Maintain health with exercise, not smoking, vaccination, and treated conditions like asthma or COPD to support efficient breathing.
