Statistics is the science that deals with collecting, analyzing, interpreting, presenting, and organizing data. 2 Types of Statistics There are two main types: Descriptive statistics and Inferential statistics. 3 Descriptive Statistics Descriptive statistics summarize data using measures such as mean, median, mode, range, and standard deviation. 4 Inferential Statistics Inferential statistics draw conclusions that extend beyond the data, using sample data to make inferences about a population. 5 Activity: "Fact or Fiction?" "statistics" (some true, some made up): "85% of people use their phone within 15 minutes of waking up" "100% of lottery winners regret their win within 5 years" "7 out of 10 dentists recommend this toothpaste" "The average person spends 6 months of their life waiting for red lights" "90% of statistics are made up on the spot" (ironic!) 6 Questions "What makes a statistic believable or suspicious?" "What questions should we ask about statistics?" 7 Vocabulary sample size, percentage, average/mean, median, trend, bias, margin of error 8 Pair Work Analysis (10 mins): In pairs, answer questions about each text: What is the main claim? What is the sample size? Is this statistic reliable? Why/why not? What additional information would you like to know? Class Discussion (5 mins): Each pair shares findings about one text Discuss: Which statistic is most/least reliable? 9 Activity: "Spot the Tricks" common ways statistics can mislead: Trick 1: Small Sample Size"3 out of 4 people prefer our product!" (But they only asked 4 people) Trick 2: Manipulated GraphsY-axis doesn't start at zero, making small differences look huge Trick 3: Cherry-Picking DataOnly showing the time period that supports your claim Trick 4: Vague Language"Studies show..." (Which studies? Who conducted them?) "Up to 90%..." (Could be 1%, could be 90%) Trick 5: Confusing Correlation with Causation"Ice cream sales and drowning deaths both increase in summer, therefore ice cream causes drowning!" (No - hot weather causes both) 10 Misleading graphs 11 12 13 14 Activity: "Present the Statistics" "According to the data..." "The statistics indicate that..." "This represents a significant..." "The figures show..." "However, we should be cautious because..." "The sample size of X suggests..." "This data may be biased because..." 15 Graphs 16 17 18 19
