On her first day, she greets her British colleague with a kiss on the cheek, as she normally would back home. The colleague looks surprised and steps back awkwardly. Discuss the situation by thinking about the following questions: What do you think went wrong here? How do you think people usually greet each other in countries like the UK? How might this situation feel different in Colombia? 2 Too Much Small Talk Tom, a British man, is visiting one of his company’s office bracnhes in New York. Before a meeting, he tries to make small talk about the weather and his flight. The Americans seem impatient and want to “get straight to business.” Tom feels they’re being rude. Discuss the situation by thinking about the following questions: Why do you think the Americans reacted that way? How might this situation play out in Colombia? What could Tom do differently to fit better in this context? 3 The Generous Tip Laura, an American tourist, goes to a restaurant in Bogotá. She’s impressed by the service and leaves a 25% tip. The waiter looks confused and insists she has overpaid. Laura feels uncomfortable and doesn’t understand what went wrong. Discuss the situation by thinking about the following questions: Why do you think the waiter was confused? What’s the usual tipping culture in Colombia vs. the US, what do you know about it? How do you feel about tipping? 4 Too Polite to Be Honest Ben, from the UK, is staying with an American host family. When asked if he liked dinner, he says, “It was interesting,” trying to be polite. The family looks disappointed. Later, he hears them say he didn’t like the food. Discuss the situation by thinking about the following questions: What do you think Ben actually meant by “interesting”? Why do you think the Americans misunderstood him? If you were a guest at someone's home for lunch , and the food was terrible , what would you say if they'd ask you if you liked it? 5 Personal Space Problems Carolina, a Colombian student, is studying in Boston. She’s friendly and likes standing close when she talks. Her American classmates often take a step back during conversations. Carolina starts to feel that they don’t like her or that she's got bad breath or something. Discuss the situation by thinking about the following questions: What do you think is happening here? How does the idea of personal space differ between cultures in your opinion? What could Carolina do to adapt? How might an American visiting Colombia feel about this? How do you feel about personal space?
