SΔ: We have long ago learned that trying to open a door with a CLOSED sign in the window is rarely reinforced (with entry into the business). The CLOSED sign decreases the probability that we will try the door.

SD: Seeing that the car is in Drive increases the probability that we will press the gas pedal.

SDp: The watchful eye of the store owner decreased stealing for a few minutes, but when the necklace was stolen, this behavior was punished.

SD: Assuming we want a soda, a lit soda machine increases the probability that we will use it to obtain the desired reinforcer.

SΔ: Assuming we want a soda, a dark soda machine decreases the probability that we will use it because that response is unlikely to be reinforced.

SD: A text notification increases texting behaviors because we have learned that the notification means these behaviors will be reinforced (by seeing a new text).

SD: We place our order when we make it to the front of the line because we have learned that this position is the only one where our latte-ordering behavior will be reinforced.

SDp: The arrival of the bully decreases the amount that Josh speaks because Josh has learned that the bully is likely to criticize (punish) whatever he says.

SΔ: A line through our menu selection decreases the probability we will order it. We have previously learned that ordering it will not get us the chalupa that we want (extinction).

SD: We may not like red lights, but they do control our behavior. They increase the probability that we will step on the brakes because doing so keeps us safe (negative reinforcement of the avoidance variety).

SD: The Snooze button is presented on our phones when the alarm is going off. The annoying alarm motivates us (EO) to turn the sound off, but how? Should we press our pillow, the nightstand, or something else? We have long ago learned that pressing the Snooze button produces a negative reinforcer – it terminates the alarm (for the moment).

SΔ: When a clock tells us that it’s too late to take the exam, we don’t bother going to the exam hall, as doing so would not be reinforced.

SD: If you are doing well in this class, then there is a good chance that the words in bold and italicized definitions have functioned as SDs. They have increased the probability of making a flash card and studying it.
