Europeans Explore the worldVersion en ligne 4TH A&B par Vilma Herrera 1 Claim To declare new lands as owned in the hope of building empires and discovering riches. 2 Treaty It is an agreement between nations about peace, trade, and other matters. 3 Voyage A long journey, especially one by sea or in space. 4 Sail To travel in a boat with sails. 5 Christopher Columbus He worked on a plan to reach Asia by sailing west. He took his plan to the king of portugal in 1482 but he turned him down. In 1485, Columbus asked the Spain's monarch to support his plan by promising them great wealth, new lands and to take the catholic religion to the people of Asia. 6 Giovanni Caboto In 1497 the king of England paid Caboto to lead an expedition across the Atlantic. Caboto reached a coast of Canada. Then, he returned to England saying he found Cathay; a place so rich in fish. Caboto became a hero in England. 7 Amerigo Vespucci He doubted Columbus and Caboto. Vespucci sailed an expedition down South America. And he came to realize that Columbus and Caboto had found an unknown continent. In 1507 a map maker published a new world map including this continent and named the new lands America for Amerigo Vespucci.
