A priest named Valentine disagreed with this rule and secretly performed marriages . When the emperor found out , Valentine and later executed .

Years later , people to honor his memory . the Middle Ages , Valentine ? s Day had become associated with romantic love . In England and France , February 14 was considered the day of birds ? mating season , which strengthened the connection the day and affection .

The first Valentine messages in the 1400s , and by the 18th century it had become common for friends and lovers to small gifts or handwritten notes . Today , the holiday one of the most popular celebrations in the world , not only for couples but also friends and family .
