À propos de cette activité

A compound sentence contains two or more independent clauses, while a complex sentence contains one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses. The key difference is that independent clauses can stand alone as a complete thought, whereas dependent (or subordinate) clauses cannot and require an independent clause to make sense.

DISCUSSION

Language becomes powerful when we know how to combine ideas clearly and effectively.

Every sentence we write or speak can express a single thought — or connect several thoughts together. That’s where clauses come in. Understanding independent and dependent clauses helps us create compound and complex sentences, which make our writing more meaningful, organized, and mature.

Today, we will explore how these types of sentences work, how to identify them, and how to use them correctly.

2

WHAT IS CLAUSE?

What is a Clause?

A clause is a group of words that has both a subject (who or what the sentence is about) and a verb (what the subject does).

👉 Example: She dances.

This has a subject (she) and a verb (dances), so it’s a clause.

3

TWO TYPES OF CLAUSE

There are two main kinds of clauses:

1. Independent Clause

  • It expresses a complete thought and can stand alone as a sentence.
  • Think of it as a strong, independent idea that doesn’t need help to make sense.

🟢 Example: I love reading books.

This sentence makes sense by itself — it’s an independent clause.

2. Dependent Clause

  • It cannot stand alone because it doesn’t express a complete thought.
  • It depends on another clause to make sense.
  • It usually begins with a subordinating conjunction like because, although, when, if, since, or while.

🟡 Example: Because I love reading books.

This sounds incomplete — it leaves you waiting for more information.

✅ When we join it with an independent clause, it becomes a complete sentence:

I always visit the library because I love reading books.

4

WHAT ARE COMPOUND SENTENCES?

Compound Sentences

A compound sentence joins two or more independent clauses using a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so).

📘 Example:

I wanted to go for a walk, but it started to rain.

  • Independent Clause 1: I wanted to go for a walk.
  • Independent Clause 2: It started to rain.
  • Joined by the conjunction but.

👉 Both parts make sense alone, but together, they show a relationship between ideas.

5

WHAT ARE COMPLEX SENTENCES?

Complex Sentences

A complex sentence contains one independent clause and at least one dependent clause.

It shows that one idea depends on another.

📗 Example:

I stayed home because it was raining.

  • Independent Clause: I stayed home
  • Dependent Clause: because it was raining

👉 The dependent clause gives the reason for the action.

6

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT

Learning how to form compound and complex sentences helps you:

  • Avoid repetition and make writing more fluent.
  • Show relationships between ideas (cause, contrast, reason, condition).
  • Sound more mature and expressive in both writing and speaking.
  • Improve paragraph flow in essays, stories, and reports.

Strong sentence variety keeps your writing from sounding boring or robotic — it shows control of grammar and creativity in thought.

7

SUMMARY

Summary

  • A clause is a group of words with a subject and a verb.
  • An independent clause stands alone; a dependent clause cannot.
  • A compound sentence joins independent clauses using FANBOYS.
  • A complex sentence combines an independent and a dependent clause.
  • Understanding these structures makes your writing clear, connected, and creative.
