Introduction to Nail Health and Disorders

Nails protect fingertips and reflect health. When they change color, shape, or thickness, it may signal a dermatologic or systemic problem. Early recognition aids treatment and prevents complications.

2

Onychomycosis (Nail Fungus)

Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the nails. Common signs include thickened, yellow or white nails, crumbly edges, and nail bed separation. Risk factors include aging, diabetes, tight footwear, and damp environments.

3

Onycholysis (Nail Lifting)

Onycholysis is the separation of the nail plate from the nail bed. It can result from trauma, psoriasis, thyroid disease, or contact dermatitis. Avoid moisture in the affected area and see a clinician for persistent cases.

4

Paronychia (Nail Fold Infection)

Paronychia is an infection of the folds around the nail. It can be acute (red, swollen, painful) or chronic (nonspecific irritation). Treatments include warm soaks, antibiotics when needed, and proper nail hygiene.

5

Koilonychia (Spoon Nails)

Koilonychia describes concave, spoon-shaped nails. It is often linked to iron deficiency anemia, but can accompany other conditions such as hemochromatosis or nutritional disorders. Address underlying causes and monitor nails.

6

Clubbing (Bulbous Fingertips)

Clubbing refers to bulbous fingertips and curving nails. It commonly signals chronic lung or heart disease, liver disease, or inflammatory conditions. A clinician can evaluate symptoms, oxygen levels, and underlying causes.

7

Beau's Lines (Linear Nails)

Beau's lines are horizontal grooves across the nail plate caused by temporary growth arrest. They appear after severe illness, malnutrition, chemotherapy, or major stress. Growth resumes after recovery.

8

Nail Psoriasis and Pitting

Pitting and rough surfaces on nails are common in nail psoriasis. Other signs include oil drop onycholysis, discoloration, and nail separation. Treat with topical steroids or systemic therapies as advised.

9

Subungual Hematoma (Nail Bed Bleed)

Subungual hematoma is bleeding under the nail, usually after trauma. It can be painful and may lift the nail. Small collections often resolve; larger or painful cases require drainage by a professional.

10

Care and Prevention

Care tips include keeping nails clean and dry, avoiding biting or picking, trimming nails straight across, and using protective gloves. Seek medical advice for persistent changes, spreading redness, pain, or fever.
