To delve into the English phonological system , the concepts of and should be distinguished . On the one hand , phonetics is the study of the sounds of human language . In theory , phonetics is an empirical science that focuses on the characteristics of sounds , without taking notice of their functions . It can be approached from three different perspectives : phonetics ( how speech sounds are articulated ) , phonetics ( how speech is transmitted ) , and phonetics ( how it is perceived via the ear ) . In order to better understand this , we must first define the word . This latter is the smallest unit of speech distinguishing one word from another . Additionally , phonemes can have variants , depending on the environment in which they take place . These are called .

If we , as teachers , pay attention to suprasegmental features ( ) , the segmental aspects of a language will improve more naturally . , , and are also linked to natural processes of language acquisition , particularly grammatical structures . The Speech Mechanism

First , we ( we breathe so that air enters our lungs ) . Then , we breathe ( air comes out of our mouth or nostrils ) . In the last step , our articulators come into play . : These can be divided into : mobile or articulators ( lips , tongue , and soft palate ) and fixed or articulators ( , ridge and palate ) .
