Test your understanding of logic gates in everyday scenarios!

1

In a security system, which gate could be used to activate alarm only if both sensors detect movement?

2

Which gate would turn on a light if at least one of two switches is on?

3

In a washing machine, which gate might control water flow based on door lock and water level sensors?

4

Which gate can be used to turn off a device when a specific sensor is active?

5

In traffic lights, which gate can be used to switch lights based on multiple sensor inputs?

6

Which gate is suitable for a system that should activate if only one of two conditions is true?

7

In a home automation system, which gate could turn on heating if either temperature sensor detects cold?

8

Which gate might be used to prevent a device from turning on if both safety sensors are active?

9

In a fire alarm system, which gate could activate the alarm if multiple smoke sensors detect smoke?

10

Which gate is used to invert a signal, such as turning a 'high' to 'low'?

Feedback

The XOR gate outputs HIGH (1) only when one input is HIGH and the other is LOW — meaning only one condition is true. If both inputs are the same (both true or both false), the output is LOW (0). Imagine a system where a fan should turn on if either the window is open OR the room is too hot, but not both. The XOR gate ensures the fan activates only under one of these conditions, avoiding unnecessary power use when both are true.

An OR gate outputs HIGH (1) when at least one of its inputs is HIGH. In this case, the heating system will turn on if: Sensor A detects cold (input = 1), or Sensor B detects cold (input = 1), or Both sensors detect cold (inputs = 1 and 1) This behavior is ideal because we want the heater to activate if any one of the sensors detects cold — not just one or the other exclusively. Imagine two rooms with temperature sensors. If either room is cold, you want the heating system to activate to maintain comfort. The OR gate ensures the heater turns on as soon as at least one sensor signals cold.

A NAND gate gives an output of HIGH (1) except when both inputs are HIGH. So, if both safety sensors are active (inputs = 1 and 1), the NAND gate outputs LOW (0), which prevents the device from turning on. In all other cases, the output is HIGH (device can turn on). Suppose a machine should not operate when both safety covers are open (sensors triggered). The NAND gate ensures that if both sensors are active, the machine stays off — acting as a safety lockout.

An OR gate outputs HIGH (1) if at least one of its inputs is HIGH. This is ideal for a fire alarm system where the alarm should sound as soon as any one smoke sensor detects smoke — even if it's just in one room. If your building has smoke sensors in multiple rooms, you don’t want to wait for all of them to detect smoke. As soon as one sensor is triggered, the OR gate ensures the alarm is activated immediately — saving precious time in emergencies.
