Passive Voice

PASSIVE VOICE. - In sentences in the active voice, the primary focus is on the subject. To give primary focus to the object of the sentences, the sentence can be changed to the passive voice.

Active:  Nine planets   orbit   the sun.  (Focus: nine planets)

Passive:  The sun is   orbited by   nine planets.  (focus: The sun)

Active:  The USA coordinated the first space programs. Passive:  The first space programs were coordinated by  the USA.

Complete the passage using the simple present passive voice form

Many crops ______________ (grow) in Taiwan. Some crops ______________ (consume) locally, but others ______________ (export). Tea ______________ (grow) in cooler parts of the island and rice ______________ (cultivate) in warmer parts. Fishing is also an important industry. A wide variety of seafood ______________ (catch). Many people ______________ (employ) in the electronics and textile industries.

Passive Voice Exercise 4

Although this method was fairly accurate, it __________________ (not use) anymore. Today, laser beams __________________ (use) instead. In the 1970s, mirrors __________________ (place) on the surface of the moon. Now, laser beams from the earth __________________ (reflect) by the mirrors, and the moon’s position __________________ (measure) to the nearest few centimeters. Its average distance from earth is 384,000 kilometers (equal to traveling around the earth ten times).
