Use only one word in each space. par Highlands School 1 PILTDOWN MAN - HISTORICAL HOAX No had Charles Darwin published his theory of the Origin of Species ( 1859 ) , the search for proof of the evolutionary link between humans and apes began . Some 50 years later , a group of scientists in London were shown fossilized fragments of a skull and jawbone which were said to be proof of Darwin's theory . Little the scientists realize on that December day in 1912 that they were involved in an elaborate hoax . Amateur archeologist Charles Dawson claimed to have found the fossils at a site in Piltdown , Sussex . Not did many of the experts believe that these fossils were a million years old , but that they belonged to the same individual - a " man " with a human skull and an ape - like jaw . Only after new technology for dating fossils was developed in the late 1940s could the bones actually tested . The tests proved that the fragments were a 500 - year - old human skull and the jawbone of an orangutan ! Never in Britain had there been such a successful hoax . But who behind it ? The leading villain was Charles Dawson himself , and a volunteer at the Natural History Museum was also suspected , as was Sir Arthur Conan Doyle , creator of the fictional character Sherlock Holmes and a member of the same Sussex archeological society as Dawson .
