Read the text below and use the word given in CAPITALS at the end of some of the lines to form a word that fits in the space in the same line. par Highlands School 1 BEHIND THE MEDIA In January 1980 , Janet Cooke , an ambitious young reporter , started her job at the Washington Post - a newspaper whose head editor's ( DEVOTE ) to well - researched , exciting stories was well - known . Nine months later , she was to publish an article that would win her the ( CELEBRATE ) Pulitzer Prize . The story was about an eight - year - old heroin addict and it was so heartbreaking that no one could read it and remain ( DIFFERENT ) . However , when the local authorities asked Cooke for more information so they could locate and help the boy , they were refused . The newspaper felt that the ( CULTIVATE ) of reliable sources was an important part of investigative reporting and journalists had the right to keep their sources ( ANONYMITY ) . Sadly , it was soon discovered that Cooke's story was a lie , and that she has also lied about her qualifications to get the job . When confronted with her deceit , Cooke realized that ( DENY ) was pointless . She issued a statement in full ( ACKNOWLEDGE ) of her guilt and returned her award . But her deceit had changed journalism forever . Before Cooke , the ( PREVAIL ) tendency was for editors to assume that their journalists were telling the truth . Janet Cooke broke that trust !
