Biographical and Imaginative Recount

It falls within the broader category of historical recounts, as it documents and preserves the life history of individuals who have shaped society, culture, or history in meaningful ways.

EXAMPLE BIOGRAPHICAL RECOUNT

R.A. Kartini was born on April 21, 1879, in Jepara, Central Java, during the Dutch colonial period in Indonesia. She was born into an aristocratic Javanese family; her father, Raden Mas Adipati Ario Sosroningrat, was the Regent of Jepara. Despite being a woman in a traditional society, Kartini received a primary education at a Dutch-language school until the age of 12.

At the age of 12, following Javanese custom for girls of noble birth, Kartini was secluded at home in preparation for marriage. This period, known as "pingitan," restricted her from continuing formal education. However, during this time of seclusion, Kartini continued to educate herself by reading books, newspapers, and magazines that her father provided her, including Dutch feminist literature.

Kartini maintained correspondence with several Dutch friends, particularly Estelle "Stella" Zeehandelaar, Rosa Abendanon, and others. Through these letters, she expressed her thoughts and aspirations regarding women's rights, education, and the struggle against colonial discrimination. Her letters revealed her dream of advancing the education of Indonesian women.

In 1903, with the support of her progressive father, Kartini opened the first Indonesian school for native girls regardless of their social status. The school taught them to read, write, and various practical skills.

Later that same year, at the age of 24, Kartini married Raden Adipati Joyodiningrat, the Regent of Rembang. Her husband supported her educational initiatives, allowing her to establish a school for women in Rembang. However, Kartini's life was cut short when she died on September 17, 1904, at the age of 25, following complications from the birth of her first child.

After her death, Kartini's collected letters were published in 1911 under the title "Door Duisternis tot Licht" (Through Darkness to Light). Her ideas and vision for women's education and emancipation continued to inspire subsequent generations of Indonesian women.

The Indonesian government later declared Kartini's birthday, April 21, as "Kartini Day" - a national holiday to commemorate her contributions to women's rights and education in Indonesia. R.A. Kartini is remembered as a national hero and a pioneer of women's rights in Indonesia, often referred to as the "Emancipator of Indonesian Women."

EXAMPLE OF IMAGINATIVE RECOUNT

Being a Spiderman

I dreamed of being a superhero when I was a teenager. I imagined myself as Spiderman.

One day, when I was fishing at the river I was bitten by a spider and luckily I was not dying. At first I felt cold for 24 hours and I was alone in my room. Nobody knew about it. I didn’t tell my family because I was afraid they would be angry with me. After that, something had happened in my body and I still did not recognize it. I lived as I did usually, went to school, went home, ate, did some activities and so on.

I realized at the first time that I had a superpower was when I was in an accident. I rode a motorcycle and suddenly a bus crashed into me. I bounced out of the road and my motorcycle was totally broken. But in that case, I did not feel any pain. There was no blood out of my body. I was angry at that time because the bus did not stop and escaped. I ran after it and I didn’t know why I could run so fast and jump so high.

I jumped to the back of the bus and climbed it like a spider. I went to the front, stopped the bus and took the driver out of the bus door. I knew that I was no longer a normal human being. I did nothing more to the bus driver. I went back home and decided what to do after that.

I did nothing like Spiderman in the movie that helped people to catch the criminals. I was an opportunist super hero. I was afraid of killing people so that I hid my power from anybody else. I used my power only when I or my family and friends got into danger.
