The Example of Factual Recount Text

Earthquake in Japan

On March 15, 2024, a powerful earthquake struck the coastal region of Hokkaido, Japan. The earthquake measured 6.8 on the Richter scale and occurred at approximately 5:30 AM local time.

The epicenter was located 30 kilometers offshore from Kushiro city. Most residents were asleep when the first tremors began, causing immediate panic as buildings started to shake violently.

Within minutes, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning for the eastern coast of Hokkaido. Authorities activated emergency alert systems, and evacuation announcements blared through neighborhood speakers.

Emergency response teams were quickly mobilized. Police officers and volunteers went door-to-door in coastal areas to ensure everyone evacuated to higher ground. Schools and community centers were converted into temporary shelters.

Three hours after the earthquake, a 2-meter tsunami wave hit the coastline of Kushiro. Thanks to the early warning system and swift evacuation efforts, no casualties were reported from the wave, although several fishing boats were damaged.

The earthquake caused significant structural damage to older buildings in the region. A four-story apartment complex in Kushiro partially collapsed, and numerous roads developed cracks and sinkholes. The main bridge connecting eastern Kushiro was closed due to safety concerns.

By midday, rescue teams had rescued 17 people trapped in damaged buildings. Hospitals treated over 200 individuals with minor to moderate injuries, mostly from falling objects or during evacuation.

Power was disrupted in more than 50,000 homes, and some areas experienced water supply issues. Emergency generators were deployed to critical facilities including hospitals and evacuation centers.

After 48 hours, most residents were able to return to their homes, though approximately 500 people whose houses were severely damaged remained in shelters. The Japanese government quickly approved emergency funding for rebuilding efforts.

The earthquake served as an important reminder of Japan's vulnerability to seismic events, but also demonstrated the effectiveness of the country's disaster preparedness systems.
