Feedback

Child welfare services are designed to protect children from harm, support families, and ensure that children have safe, stable, and nurturing environments.

Mandated reporters who work indirectly with or around children, are required by law to file a report immediately if they suspect abuse or neglect. Non-mandated reporters such as neighbors, friends, other relatives can also report anonymously.

A proper investigation is necessary to assess the child’s safety and educational needs, especially when signs of neglect are present.

Independent living programs help older youth transition out of foster care by providing support in housing, employment, and education.

While it may not be ideal parenting, allowing a teen some autonomy isn’t maltreatment unless it leads to clear harm or neglect.

Mandated reporters are required to report suspected abuse—not prove it. The investigation is the responsibility of child protective services

Trauma-informed care includes addressing cultural identity and emotional needs. Cultural support or alternate placements may help the child feel more secure.

The least restrictive environment refers to a setting that closely resembles a normal family life while still meeting the child’s safety and care needs.

The interviewer’s job is to facilitate a neutral, accurate disclosure — not to prove or disprove abuse or offer clinical services.

Under federal law, 14- and 15-year-olds cannot work after 7 p.m. during the school year (extended to 9 p.m. in summer).

The Orphan Train Movement relocated thousands of children from cities to rural homes — a controversial early form of foster care.

Children during this time period were often kidnapped and sold to ship captains, bringing them to America intended as house servants—until they became adults.

Child maltreatment includes neglect or harm caused by lack of action or care, even if the intent wasn’t to harm.

Foster care is a temporary solution while long-term plans such as reunification, adoption, or guardianship are developed.

While reunification is often the preferred outcome, it's not always in the child's best interest if the environment remains unsafe or abusive.
