It's a challenge we all face : How to survive in a world where we are asked to do more and more . Here's one solution .

It's true , isn't it ? That the business world of today ? indeed life in general ? views it as a positive to take on more and more , and pack our lives with doing more and more activities . We are told that life is short and we need experiences . If we accept more work and more responsibility , the result will be a greater success . Except that it is not always true . The doctrine of essentialism tries to help one to achieve a balance that is right for the individual . In the words of one of its , Greg McKeown , in his book , Essentialism : The disciplined pursuit of doing less , it aims to help you " between external noise and internal voice . " So , if you think that you are taking on too much , or that you find it hard to say no to any request , I suggest you read on .

Don't be misled , essentialism is not a tactic or a management tool that requires a new approach to life . Basically , it is a wake up call before we are driven mad by the constant demands of a consumer society , driven forward even faster by social media and communication technology . This is not an argument in favor of total of the modern world , but rather a desire to alert people of the need to be selective . It is far better to be open and honest than to constantly accept tasks that cannot be completed successfully or at a great personal cost .

The first step is to recognize the importance of thought over that of . Learn the phrase : " Let me get back to you , " and use it frequently . When you pause for thought , you give yourself the opportunity to think what is essential and what is not . You learn to between what you are doing because of an external pressure , and what you should be doing based on your needs and ambitions . Learning to say no and being OK with that is an important step .

Secondly , battle with the fear of missing out . Most of us have experienced this to a greater or lesser degree . That trip to see a potential client , the holiday of a lifetime , etc . A packed calendar or a packed schedule is not always valuable . Greg says , " We oversold the value of more , and undersold the value of less . " You can apply this principle to meetings too . Do not attend meetings that are not important to you . If you feel guilty ring up the organizer , make your apology , and ask if there is anything you can contribute with .

Try to understand that not everything has equal importance . Some things are more valuable than others . Decide what is important to you ? your priorities ? by being selective , you will discover what is more in life . If it helps , then you ask yourself the question : " Can I live without this ? " You'll then get an idea of how much value the objective , experience , or work has and whether you should give your time , energy , and effort to it . If you follow this path , you too may learn to understand how less can really mean more .
