1 . ! Become familiar with the test structure . Take practice tests . Make sure you know how to use online tools .

2 . Time ! When you start the test , before you do anything else , figure out where you should be when you have used half your time . Pay attention to the .

3 . Notice the title . Look for information that comes before or after the main passage . Pay attention to graphics , maps , charts , and illustrations .

4 . Mark up the passage as you ? re reading it ! the TITLE , main ideas , details , etc . Don ? t forget the sidebars , illustrations , and background info . Physically interacting with the test fires up your brain !

5 . Hard questions or content ? Read . If the passage is poetry , YOU MUST READ IT AT LEAST 2 - 3 times . NO ONE understands poetry the first time ! : )

6 . Break apart hard words . Look for word parts / roots / prefixes that you know to try to figure out .

7 . Mark out the answers . There will usually be at least one or two .

8 . Substitute in the possible answer choices . Use the process of . There will frequently be two that will kind of work , but there will always be one that is the best .

9 . NOTHING ! Do not leave a question without an answer . You are in the best possible position to answer a question right after you read the passage . Circle / come back to re - check it if you want , BUT ANSWER IT RIGHT THEN .

10 . LAST RESORT - - If you absolutely have no idea , choose B or C if you haven ? t ruled them out . , they are slightly more likely to be the answers .

11 . When writing an essay take five minutes to determine your main points and create a rough outline . Make sure you are answering the question that is asked , not the one you want to answer . WRITE IN 5 PARAGRAPHS THAT ARE SEPARATED BY . EXPLAIN what the evidence means ( this means , this shows , this proves ) . Proofread and touch every word . Remember the rubric !

12 . use leftover time to re - test . Hide your answers and re - choose . " Checking your work " does not mean simply re - reading it .
