A habitat is the natural environment where an organism lives, grows, and thrives. It provides all the essential resources an organism needs to survive and reproduce, including: Food, Water, Shelter, Space.
In Mauritius, different habitats support unique species, including endemic (found only in Mauritius) and native species. For example, Dry forests support the Mauritius Kestrel and Pink Pigeon. Coastal and marine habitats provide a home for sea turtles, corals, and fish. Wetlands support birds like the Mauritius Fody and amphibians.
The Mauritian Wildlife Foundation (MWF) is an independent, non-governmental, non-profit conservation agency working in Mauritius and the Outer Islands to save threatened endemic local flora and fauna.
Deforestation and urbanization are among the biggest threats to wildlife in Mauritius. The island has already lost much of its native forests due to human activities such as agriculture, infrastructure development, and settlement expansion.
The dodo was an endemic species found only in Mauritius. It was a flightless bird that evolved without natural predators on the island. Unfortunately, due to human activities and the introduction of invasive species, the dodo became extinct by the late 1600s. Crocodiles are bred in captivity at La Vanille Nature Park in Mauritius. The park is home to Nile crocodiles, which are not native to Mauritius but are bred for conservation, educational, and commercial purposes.
Located in Rivière des Anguilles, the park specializes in crocodile farming and offers visitors the chance to learn about these reptiles up close. Round Island is a small, uninhabited islet about 22.5 km north of Mauritius. The island is home to two endemic and rare snake species:
Round Island Boa – A non-venomous snake that plays an important role in the island’s ecosystem.
Keel-scaled Boa – Unfortunately, this species has undergone a severe historical decline that led to its extinction across most of its historical range, and it survived for over a century only on Round Island where native habitat was reduced dramatically by overgrazing of invasive goats and rabbits. The survival of this species is, wholly dependent on ongoing conservation management, particularly invasive species control.
The Fauvette de Rodrigues, also known as the Rodrigues Warbler, is a small brownish bird with a pale underside, well-adapted to blending into its surroundings. It is a bird endemic to Rodrigues Island and can be found mainly in forested areas, wetlands, and dense vegetations. Previously considered critically endangered due to habitat destruction, but conservation efforts have helped improve its population.
Île aux Cocos is a small uninhabited island lying four kilometres west of Rodrigues in the Indian Ocean. It is a nature reserve known for its seabird colonies. The island is not accessible to the public except via guided visits. The southern tip delineated by wooden posts is closed to visitors to protect the bird population.
Round Island, Black River Gorges and Île aux Aigrettes are nature reserves in Mauritius that serve as important habitats for many endemic animals. These reserves are crucial for protecting Mauritius’s biodiversity, as many endemic species are found nowhere else in the world.
The SSR Botanical Garden is not a national reserve as it is a man-made botanical garden rather than a natural protected area. Unlike national reserves, it is not a wildlife sanctuary and does not focus on endemic species conservation like Black River Gorges or Île aux Aigrettes.
