Office rage

Are your work colleagues driving you crazy ? Sometimes , it's hard to control your anger and can result in being or worse , being fired . Work - related stress is recognized as a growing problem and ? through illness and loss of productivity ? is costing employers all over the world billions . Most workers have witnessed someone lose their temper ( 83% ) or have lost their temper themselves ( 63% ) . Some of the major irritants include : inconsiderate bosses , lazy colleagues , noise , after hour emails and phone calls , and technical difficulties .

work - related irritants can cause a huge amount of anger and stress . So is there a safe way to release it ? One unusual way to is to visit a rage room , where you can pay to trash a printer or some other pieces of office equipment ? usually with a baseball bat . Prices vary from $20 to $100 lasting between 10 to 45 minutes . Ed Hunter , who founded a rage room in Australia , said : ? We're giving people permission to get angry in a safe environment . ? This is a new and fun way to break work - related stress . Stephen Shew , who co - founded Battle Sports in Toronto , says they go through 15 printers a week . Other rage room services in the United States agree that it is a growing niche market and they ask their clients to sign disclaimers and wear protective clothing and masks before they begin office equipment .

Rage rooms seem to attract a professional clientele : lawyers , civil servants , and corporate employees . Some like to pile the office equipment in a pyramid shape and take some selfies before beginning the destruction . Interestingly enough , some of the rage room companies cite that 60 to 70% of their clients are female .

But is this a good way to relieve stress ? Professor Brad J . Bushman of The Ohio State University disagrees . He argues that thinking about something that makes you angry and smashing things in response to it , will only remind you about these tense situations and will inevitably make you relive them . He recommends responding to anger in more common ways , such as : watching a comedy , using delay tactics like counting to ten , or doing nothing at all . He argues that this is a better resolution to using rage rooms . High blood pressure , heart rate , and adrenaline should not be accompanied by destroying furniture and office equipment .

So , what should you do if you feel angry at work ? Some of the recommendations include :
? Delay tactics ? count to ten before speaking .
? Don't get 'hangry' ? some people get grumpy when they don't eat . Feed your body well and at regular times .
? Music ? listen to something that calms you at work .
? Distraction ? do something that will completely take your mind off the issue . Talk to a colleague about something unrelated , do some sudoku or breathing exercises , or go to the gym during your lunch break .
