Senior nomads

Learn about a couple who decided to make their dreams come true by retiring and traveling around the world using Airbnb .

Most people have heard of digital nomads ? people who can work from anywhere as long as they have internet access . But , have you heard of senior nomads ? retired people who have chosen to live out their retirement by traveling the world and living in Airbnbs ? That's exactly what Michael and Debbie Campbell from Seattle did . The couple has become Airbnb celebrities , speaking at their corporate events and even having their travel blogs published in the New York Times ! So , how did they go from working full time to retiring and traveling the world ?

Debbie and Michael were 58 and 68 , respectively , with excellent jobs , living in Seattle , Washington . Their daughter , who lives in France , came to visit them and noticed a of 37 countries that the couple had on their refrigerator . She suggested they rent out their house in Seattle and start working on that wish list using Airbnb . The couple had never heard of the company at the time . At first , they were very by the thought . They weren't internet users and had reservations about people wanting to rent to them since they were an older couple , so they didn't know whether they would enjoy being nomadic or not . But , they decided to , figure out a budget , and made a list of rules for their nomadic retirement lifestyle ? they would continue traveling as long as they stuck to their budget , were having fun , were learning , and were still in love . No need to say they are still going strong . Since 2012 , the lovebirds have been to over 70 countries and spent over 1 , 500 nights in Airbnbs around the world so far . They document everything they spend and do in travel journals and send them back home because they get too heavy to carry around from place to place .

Some of the requirements they have are a washing machine and a big table where they can work on their travel blog , upcoming book , and journals . They have spent about 500 nights in various places , such as with friends , family , one - night stays in hotels , or overnight on a train or bus . Their nightly budget is $90 , which doesn't include meals , entertainment , or trips . Sometimes , they stay in cheaper places or cities , and sometimes , they on a flat with a nice view or in a more expensive part of the city . They don't buy souvenirs ? Debbie's philosophy is , " If you can't drink it , eat it , ride on it , or attend it , then you can't buy it . " They also look for free tours , concerts , and events in the cities they visit to stick to their budget .

Another thing that made them feel more is that they can write to their Airbnb hosts before they arrive , so there is always an established relationship before their arrival . They typically contact five places they are considering in each city , then choose one based on the reviews and the hosts' responses . They walk as much as possible because it's free , averaging at least 8 , 000 steps per day . No doubt it's great for their health . They shop at local markets and don't eat out much to help on . Over the course of their stays , they have had only one very negative experience ? very impressive , considering how many nights they have spent in other people's homes . If you would like to learn more about their adventures , you can read their book called , Your keys , our home .
