An unexpected 500 , 000 young people ( go ) to the concert when organizers ( to be ) only expecting about 200 , 000 with only 186 , 000 pre - concert tickets ( sell ) . With the unexpected amount of people driving toward the rural town , the New York State Thruway ( to be ) jammed and traffic couldn't move . The concert ( to be ) originally made a profit - making venture although it's famously known as a free concert . The concert ( to be ) only free after thousands of unexpected people showed up and organizers ( realize ) the concert ( to be ) too large to control payment . The concert ( to be ) for three days . It ( include ) 32 of the best acts of 1969 . To black and white artists alike , Woodstock is known as a victory of peace and love among a country that ( to be ) in shambles due to war and prejudice . Acts like Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin ( take ) the stage and entranced almost half a million people who ( do not ) have enough food or sanitation options to sustain the three day venture . People ( camp ) out through hours of rain and at no time did the audience get violent . It was a different experience and some have ( try ) to recreate it but never has it been the same as August 1969 . Rock 'n' roll ( prove ) to be a genre of different sounds that ( to be ) able to unify thousands of people .
