potential open active sodium repolarised depolarisation positively higher closed pump open threshold influx potassium functioning

Action potential is controlled by electrical difference between the inner and outer axon membranes . This difference is due to the differences of sodium and ions concentrations .

During resting potential , sodium ion concentration is on the outside of the membrane . Sodium ion is pumped out by the - potassium via transport . Voltage - gated sodium channels are all , therefore preventing any sodium ions from reentering the axon .

When a stimulus is present , sodium - potassium pump stops . Voltage - gated sodium channels start to . This allows sodium ions to flow into the axon . This causes the voltage if the inner membrane to be more positive - this is called the .

As the potential value is achieved , more sodium ions enter the axon , causing a sodium . This will proceed to the generation of an action potential . Sodium ions will flow to the next region of the axon . This will cause an action potential to be generated in the next region of the axon .
Meanwhile , as the inner membrane is charged and the outer is negatively charged , voltage - gated potassium channels start to . Potassium ions diffuse out of the axon , causing the axon membrane to be .
