Nowadays , many children spend more time on academic study than ever before . The average American child probably spends around thirty - six hours a week studying . That's compared with a thirty hours in the 1990s . On the of it , that might not seem like a bad thing . After all , the more you study , the more intelligent you become , right ? Well , not necessarily , and it may actually have the opposite . The problem is that too much work generates stress and anxiety , which makes it harder to learn things . Not only that , but all of this study could actually interfere with a child's development . That is to say , they may not be learning the things that are most relevant to them at that time . For many young people , learning how to self - esteem or how to with other people in a team are arguably more important skills . These are things which are best learnt in a relaxed environment . We should therefore ensure that students have the chance to take part in sports and other activities that relaxation . This means that schools might need to go on the amount of work they expect children to do .
