After the Gupta Empire, India broke apart into smaller kingdoms, each ruled by its own Hindu king. The northern kingdoms were later invaded, while the southern ones lasted much longer.

Arab armies came to northwest India and created peaceful Muslim kingdoms. This was the first major arrival of Islam in India.

Mahmud of Ghazni, who came from Afghanistan, launched violent raids into northern India, targeting temples and taking treasure.

Muhammad of Ghur, another Afghan leader, conquered many northern Indian kingdoms and paved the way for Muslim rule in Delhi.

Aibak, originally a Turkish slave, became the first Sultan of Delhi in 1206 and started the Delhi Sultanate, which lasted for 300 years.

Tamerlane, a Mongol leader from Central Asia, attacked Delhi brutally, killing many people and weakening the Sultanate.

Tamerlane’s destruction of Delhi left the Sultanate weak and vulnerable to future invasions.
