This begins to develop an early stage in the life of an organization a result of the need to group activities . The formal organization ensures that activities are separated departments such as production , marketing , finance , and personnel . Further sub - departments will develop as the organization grows size . Relationships employees are defined . Tasks are divided such a way as to make use specialist technical and management skills . Rules and procedures to be followed are established . The formal organization establishes where decisions are be made and channels communication to be created .
Line departments are the activities which are essential survival , since they are directly concerned with the production and distribution the product or service . Where the formal structure the organization is based on line activities , it is referred as ? line organization ? . case of a manufacturing firm , the key activities are production , sales and product development . All other activities are grouped around these key areas . A retail organization adopting a line organization would group its activities around purchasing , finance and sales .
