The meeting of two worlds
In the 15th century , many people believed that the was flat . Cristóbal Colón ( Christopher Columbus ) , a sailor from Genoa , Italy , was convinced the world was round . He presented his plan to sail west to Asia to the Reyes and they agreed to finance him .
On the 3rd of August 1492 , Colón set off from Palos de la Frontera , Huelva . Two months later , on the 12th of , the expedition reached land . Colón thought he had reached Japan , but , in fact , he had landed on the island of San .
Years later , the Italian navigator Amerigo Vespucci proved that these islands were part of a new continent . In his honour , the continent was named .
