THE TEARLESS ONION

Onions are extremely beneficial to our health . By eating onions , the risk of heart disease ( 1 ) ( can / lower ) . Furthermore , onions help to reduce blood sugar levels and maintain healthy bones . The onions have one drawback , though : it makes us cry . But it seems that cooks ( 2 ) ( not have to / suffer ) the discomforts of stinging eyes in the future . After years of research , scientists in New Zealand and Japan ( 3 ) now ( able to / shut down ) the gene in the onion which is responsible for irritating the eyes and causing tears . This is because the researchers are not merely interested in producing an onion that is less unpleasant to prepare .
