The reign of Alfonso ( 1902 - ) :

failed due to continuous conflicts that occurred in the early years of the 20th century . We can highlight :

Anticlericalism .
The movement ( strikes , riots . . . ) .
The war with for control of the North African region . In this war , the infamous " of " occurred in 1921 , where , Spanish soldiers lost their lives .
This situation weakened Alfonso XIII and led Spanish military officials to carry out a ( with the King's approval ) , giving rise to the beginning of the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera ( - 1930 ) . These were years of great economic prosperity , during which public works were carried out , and national companies such as Correos and Telefónica were established .
The dictator managed to resolve the African problem with the Landing of ( 1925 ) .
Primo de Rivera's government faced a crisis in 1929 because he attempted to emulate fascist model , which was not accepted by politicians and the military . Primo de Rivera resigned from power .
Republicans began to gain strength . Their leaders signed the San Pact ( 1930 ) to usher in the Republic ( as the monarchy had been discredited due to its support for the dictatorship ) . In the municipal elections on April , 1931 , republican and socialist parties achieved victory in cities . This situation prompted Alfonso XIII to go into exile . On April 14 , , the Second was proclaimed ( 1931 - 1936 ) .
